Hans Jóhannsson, a violin maker and town artist of Garðabær, will give a talk at the museums workshop Smiðja.
Hans will specifically discuss his experimental instruments and various related projects, where his work has crossed the boundaries of traditional instrument making, design, research, entrepreneurship, and even visual art.
Hans is best known for creating outstanding string instruments, which have found their way into the hands of musicians worldwide. Over a year ago, he held a retrospective exhibition at Ásmundarsalur and organized a series of events about his life’s work. In this lecture at the Museum of Design and Applied Art he plans to delve deeper into the aspect of his work that is less known, namely the research side and his attempts to create 21st-century instruments that are similar to traditional ones but built on new materials and aesthetics.
